A large number of scrolls were among the New Finds. Scrolls are an older type of book that was rolled and unrolled horizontally (right to left, and left to right respectively) so that one page would be exposed at a time, for writing or reading. Scrolls continued to be used in the liturgy all the way to the fifteenth century, though in later times they were rolled vertically (from top to bottom). Scroll E19 contains almost the entire holy Liturgy of the Presanctified, and is written in an elegant twelfth-thirteenth century minuscule script, decorated with colorful initials.
