From the Palaeologan era (thirteenth century) the elderly Evangelist is portrayed seated, listening to the voice of God. Later on, the cave of the Revelation on Patmos island is added to the iconography. Even though the identity of the painter has been disputed, there is no doubt about the authenticity of the work.
