The three emblematic figures of Sinai iconography are artfully arranged in this icon. The Mother of God, in the type of the Virgin of the Bush, stands in the Holy Bush. Next to her, Saint Catherine, whose worship was introduced in the monastery after the translation of her relics there in the tenth – eleventh centuries, replaces the prophets and saints that normally flanked the Virgin Mother of God in older icons. The figure of Moses loosing his sandal refers to the historic event of Theophany, thus rendering this icon a quintessential Sinai pilgrimage icon.
