This censer is decorated with architectural forms which were preferred by Gothic goldsmiths and silversmiths in sixteenth century southeastern Europe. The lid is an intricate complex of church-like forms arranged on two levels that converge towards a pointed tip, while, in contrast, the simple, shallow, incense holding vessel rests on a polygonal support and is left without ornament except for a dedicatory inscription in Slavonic. The item is the gift of the widow of the Voivode of Moldavia, Alexander Lăpuşneanu, Roxandra, to the Prodromos chapel in Sinai. Originally this censer must have been accompanied by a casket of similar form and style, namely casket number 30.7; censer and casket are normally used together in liturgical services.
