Saint Catherine is depicted accompanied by angels holding up her halo. The symbols of the Mother of God adopted by Cretan painters in the sixteenth century refer to her learning, her struggle for Christ, and her martyrdom and triumph.

An international team of 23 world-renowned scholars, each an expert in ancient languages and manuscript studies, are working with the project to identify and describe the undertexts of Sinai palimpsests, after they are rendered legible via spectral imaging.

Uncovering Hidden Ancient Texts

The Sinai Palimpsests Project is using state-of-the-art spectral imaging to recover erased texts from palimpsest manuscripts in the library of St. Catherine’s Monastery of the Sinai, the world’s oldest continually operating monastery.
